The former flagship Marshall Field and Company Building location on State Street in the Loop of downtown Chicago was officially renamed Macy's on State Street on September 9, 2006 and is now one of four national Macy's flagship stores.

The first of Marshall Field's iconic landmark Great Clocks was installed at the corner of State and Washington Streets on November 26, 1897.

In 2003, the Dayton-Hudson Corporation (renamed Target Corporation) approached Barbara's with the opportunity to become a partner business and create a full-service bookstore in the then Marshall Fields on State Street department store. Two beloved Chicago businesses combining forces.

Over time, we have expanded our presence and proudly serve many Macy's stores throughout the country with seasonal, speciality and event book displays, in addition to our bookstore at Macy's on State Street.

Barbara's Bookstore has partnered with Macy's on State Street to offer a full-service bookstore in the Marketplace on the lower level next to the food court. Guests of this store will find a large selection of books, great prices and a helpful and knowledgable staff. Everything you have come to expect from Barbara's.

Our Macy's location also serves as a venue for exciting events and author appearances. At this bookstore-within-a-department-store, we have hosted such authors as Gene Hackman, Emeril Lagasse, Ty Pennington, Gordon Ramsay, Rachel Ray and Nicholas Sparks (to name but a few).
